If you’ve been thinking about a career change but aren’t sure where to start, it can feel like standing at a crossroads with no map.
The demands of daily life, doubts about your skills, or uncertainty about what you really want can keep you stuck for years.
But clarity begins with something simple taking the time to visualise.
So, what should you actually do? When should you do it? And why is it worth it?
Let’s break it down.
- WHAT TO DO: Start with Visualisation
Before diving into job boards or rewriting your CV, start by getting clear on what you actually want. Most people skip this part and end up chasing opportunities that don’t fit.
Here’s how to begin:
- Set aside 15–20 minutes with a pen and paper
- Reflect on these prompts:
- What kind of work would make me feel proud and energised?
- What kind of people do I want to work with or avoid?
- What income would allow me to live the life I want?
- What kind of impact do I want to make in my community or the world?
- Which of my values must be reflected in the work I do?
There’s no pressure to have perfect answers, this is about honesty, not perfection.
- WHEN TO DO IT: Start Now, Set a Date
Waiting until the “right time” often means waiting forever. The right time is now, while the idea is fresh, and before your inner critic has a chance to talk you out of it.
Try this:
- Choose a date this week to sit down and do your visualisation
- Set another date within the next 30 days to take a small step forward researching a course, talking to someone in a role that interests you, or booking a coaching session
A date brings intention. Without one, it’s just a nice idea floating in your head.
- WHY TO DO IT: Because This Is Your Life
It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing what’s expected, fitting around your boss’s diary, meeting obligations, following old career paths because they’re familiar.
But this is your life. You’re allowed to want more. You’re allowed to design something that fits you, not the other way around.
Visualisation is the first act of reclaiming that. It helps you:
- Define what success actually looks like for you now
- Make decisions based on your values
- Build a life and career by design—not default
And if income is part of the picture? You don’t need to settle. Your earning potential isn’t dictated by one person. Wanting more is valid. And mindset plays a huge role in believing it’s possible.
