For many this week forms the start of the new work year. As we get ready to return to work after the festive season, and it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit overwhelmed as you dive back into your routine. Whether you’re running your own business or working for an employer, the transition back can feel equally challenging.
If you’re finding it hard to face returning to work with enthusiasm, you’re not alone – I’ve been there too. This blog is here to offer some practical steps you can take to manage those negative feelings and make a positive change in your work life.
- Understanding Your Feelings
The first step is to pause and focus on yourself. It’s essential to understand what you’re truly feeling. Do you sense that something isn’t quite right but can’t put your finger on it? Take a moment to reflect on which aspects of your job might be contributing to these negative emotions.
Is it the workload, the relationships with colleagues, or perhaps specific tasks that drain your energy? Or maybe you’re already aware of the problem – you might be facing a difficult boss, colleague, or client, and the thought of seeing them again is causing you anxiety. Staying at home and finishing the last of the Christmas leftovers seems like a much more appealing option!
It could also be that you’re uncertain about what you want to do next, but you recognise the flexibility your current role offers. Or perhaps you’re seeking information to make your job more fulfilling without having to change everything. The key here is to become more aware of your emotions and what triggers them – this is the first step toward finding clarity and solutions. It may be uncomfortable at first, or even emotional, but sit with those feelings as long as you need to.
2. Growing Personally and Professionally
Once you have a clearer understanding of your feelings, you can start to identify possible solutions. Reflecting on your situation might lead you to realise that you need external support to navigate the way forward.
Seeking guidance from friends, mentors, or colleagues can help offer a fresh perspective and provide advice on overcoming challenges at work. You might discover that the path to fulfilment is easier to find with a little external insight.
Do you need to work on building more positive relationships with your colleagues? While we can’t control other people’s behaviour, we can certainly influence our own. As Wayne Dyer once said, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
Another way to boost your confidence and satisfaction in your work is to consider developing new skills. Online courses, workshops, and seminars are fantastic ways to expand your knowledge and open up new opportunities for growth.
3. Embrace Change
If you’ve already explored all the options and feel like your current job isn’t the right fit for you anymore, it may be time for a change. However, don’t rush into any decisions. Take the time to really consider what you want before making any drastic moves. Use what you’ve learned from your current job to help inform your next steps.
Next week, I’ll be discussing how to set career goals, so stay tuned for that. Whether you make small adjustments to your work habits, relationships, or environment, or decide on a bigger change, you’ll be taking meaningful steps towards a more positive and fulfilling career.
Here’s to a year of personal and professional growth!
I hope that you find this helpful and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
