Refresh, Reflect & Reconnect – 3 Positive Benefits to Changing Your Surroundings

In the whirlwind of daily life, it’s easy to get swept up in routines and familiarity. While building habits is crucial, it’s equally important to recognise when these patterns turn into negative habits, trapping us in a cycle of monotony and stagnation. I’ve experienced firsthand how easily this can happen, it looks like —too much social media, avoiding social interactions, and a lack of clarity leading to unproductive days

A change of scenery provides an opportunity to step back and gain perspective on our lives and challenges.

Tony Robbins says, “change your state, change your story”. By changing your state, I mean, get up if you are sitting down, do star jumps, clap, dance. All of these are ways of triggering your mind and nervous system to focus on the present moment and break free from negative feelings.

I found myself recently feeling frustrated and lonely, living too much in my own head. Recognising the need for change, I made a spontaneous decision to book a weekend getaway to a new city.  Knowing that a total change of scenery, no matter how small, can have massive impact on our mental and physical wellbeing.

Initially hesitant to go away on my own, thinking it would fuel my feelings of loneliness. But what I found was that, I really enjoyed the time on my own. Walking through unfamiliar streets and indulging in whatever I choose, providing me with the much-needed change of scenery.

Although a change of scenery doesn’t always require a plane ticket—it can be as simple as visiting a different coffee shop or taking a spontaneous day trip.

Doing something new, having a little adventure, stepping out of our comfort zones or routines can refresh our outlook on life and provide valuable insights back to ourselves.

I delve into three key benefits of changing your surroundings below.

1. Refresh – Helps To Break Your Routine

When you are in the same environment day in and day out, your creativity and problem-solving abilities suffer. Adding in a change of scenery disrupts this monotony, sparking new ideas and perspectives. Though it may feel challenging at first, be open to it.

Make it a habit to explore at least one new place a month, whether it’s a local park, museum, or cafe. Embrace the unfamiliar and allow yourself to be surprised by what you discover.

2. Reflect – Provides An Opportunity For Self-Reflection

By temporarily detaching from our everyday obligations, we gain clarity on what truly matters to us and can realign our actions with our aspirations.

We can live such busy lives that it can be sometimes easy to lose touch with ourselves and our innermost desires. A change of scenery creates space for self-reflection and introspection, allowing you to reconnect with your values, passions, and goals.

For me, I definitely got the chance to connect with myself. I was also in a country that isn’t my first language. It allowed me to tune into my own thoughts more, I think because I wasn’t hearing or understanding what was being said around me in detail. So, I could shut off that part where you randomly take in other people’s conversations, interrupting your thoughts.

I was able to give myself time to reflect and space to journal, an opportunity to get thoughts onto paper and bring myself back to life, remembering what my desires are and what I needed to do to work towards them. There’s something nice about being able to sit in a bar, journal and drink my new favourite cocktail a negroni (lovely).

3. Reconnect – Provides An Opportunity For Knowledge & Personal Growth

When you immerse yourself into new and diverse environments, it’s an opportunity to cultivate a greater appreciation for the richness and complexity of the world around us.

I love to people watch whether that’s in a local cafe or in a new country. Taking time to observe people and the world from a new perspective. I take inspiration from how other people show up in life. Looking at ways to apply that to my life and grow as a person.

If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed or stuck in a rut, try taking a day trip or visit somewhere new. Allow yourself to soak in the sights, sounds, and experiences without judgment, and reflect on how they differ from your usual surroundings.

So, I invite you or challenge you to have a think about the times when you felt bit overwhelmed stuck. What did you change to change how you felt?

A change of scenery is a powerful tool for rejuvenating the mind, fostering creativity, and gaining perspective on life’s journey. Whether it’s a spontaneous adventure or a planned excursion, stepping outside of our comfort zones opens doors to new experiences and insights.

By incorporating small changes into our routine, we can enrich our lives in unexpected ways. So, dare to explore, wander, and discover the magic that awaits beyond the familiar.
