Setting and Achieving Career Goals After 40: 6 Practical Tips to Help You Do It with Confidence

In last week’s blog, I wrote about the challenges of returning to work after the festive break, exploring strategies to overcome negative feelings. This time I wanted to shift the focus to those who have reflected on their career path and have decided that a change is in order. Whether it’s climbing the corporate ladder, switching professions, or starting your own business, setting clear goals, and creating a plan can make all the difference.

There is so much to talk about on this subject. However, my aim with this blog post, is to share some effective ways to set career goals and turn aspirations into reality.

If you feel like you have a little block in where to start, I have put together a few question for you to consider to get the process started. You can download it here.

  1. Reflect on Your Passions and Strengths

As a woman over 40, you bring a wealth of experience, skills, and unique perspectives to the table – perhaps more than you realise.

The first step, as always, in getting clear with your career goals is self-reflection. Start by reflecting on your passions and strengths. What sparks excitement in you each morning? Identify your talents and skills, cultivating a self-awareness that aligns your goals with what truly matters. Clarify your desires and motivations. Understanding the ‘why’ behind your goals is the cornerstone of meaningful and purpose-driven pursuits.

2. Network & Gather Information

If you are still unsure about your next steps, seek advice before making drastic changes. Connect with individuals who can provide sound advice to set you in the right direction. Networking is a powerful tool for career growth and developing knowledge.

If you are clear about your goals, strategic networking can help build meaningful connections. This could be internally within an organisation, or externally. Through attending industry events, joining professional groups, and leveraging social media platforms.

3. Building a network

This provides support, advice, and valuable opportunities. Be strategic and intentional in building your network and seek guidance from those who have walked similar paths. Stay open to new possibilities and keep your goal in mind You may not know how you’ll achieve it, but openness to the ‘how’ enables you to seize opportunities as they arise!

4. Seek and Embrace Feedback

As you progress toward your goals, seek feedback from mentors, peers, or colleagues. Constructive criticism is a powerful tool for improvement. Use the feedback to adjust your plan if necessary, ensuring you stay on track and continue to grow.

5. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning

Do you need to develop a skills plan? Developing a skills plan is essential for goal achievement. Identify the necessary skills and create a plan to acquire or enhance them. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning through online courses, workshops, conferences, or mentorship. Remember, acquiring new skills is a journey, not a race.

6. Develop a Step-by-Step Plan

Break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps. Focus on where to direct your efforts, such as acquiring necessary training or reaching out to potential employers.

If you want to work for a particular company, but you can’t see that they have any vacancies, don’t let that stop you. Use platforms like LinkedIn to contact the relevant hiring managers or email them directly, letting them know why you would add value to their organisation. Make sure that you update your LinkedIn profile before this, to showcase your knowledge and achievements.

If you want to start a business, assess your skills, funds, and mindset for the challenge?

Whatever it is that you need to do, break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps. Create a timeline and allocate tasks to make your goals less daunting and more achievable.

Finally, take intentional steps towards realising your dreams. You have the power to shape the fulfilling professional life you deserve. Whether you’re seeking a career change, skill enhancement, or starting the business of your dreams, take intentional steps towards making them a reality. Remember it’s never too late to shine and create the career you’ve always envisioned.
