Have you ever felt the need for change in your life, but the thought of a complete overhaul seems a bit too overwhelming? Well, I’ve been there too. Earlier this year, I decided it was time to make some changes in my life, and I can’t wait to share the details of that decision with you in a future blog post.
But today, I want to talk about one of the small, yet incredibly impactful, changes I made, by incorporating a short morning walk into my daily routine.
So, let’s get personal. No, I don’t have a loyal dog to nudge me out the door each morning. Instead, I must rely on my own determination and a bit of accountability to make this happen.
But through consistency I have managed to make a morning walk part of my life, and here’s how and what I’ve learnt, and I hope it inspires you to do the same.
- Decide to make a change
I work from home a lot and it can sometimes feel like a never-ending cycle of sitting at a desk staring at a screen, not always being productive and living in my own head too much. I realised that I needed to get out of the house more. A morning walk became the perfect solution. It could help set the tone and help kickstart my day, even when I’m feeling tired. The fresh air, the gentle exercise, and the beauty of nature around me truly rejuvenate me each day.
- Set yourself a time
The first step was to set a specific time for my morning walk. Having a designated time in my daily routine made it easier to stick to the habit. In fact, do sometimes get a little stressed if I ended up leaving the house later than I had planned. But that’s what accountability is all about, right?
Another important I’ve learned on this journey is not to berate myself if I happen to miss a day. Life happens, and it’s essential to be flexible and forgiving, especially when building new habits.
- Decide for how long or how far
My walk generally only takes about 25 minutes long and I think that’s why I have found it easier to stick to as it doesn’t take up too much time in my day. I do take longer walk at the weekend and with friends but this weekday morning habit for me is important.
- Cherise the ‘ME’ time
One of the things I absolutely love about taking a morning walk is the ‘me’ time it provides. In the quietude of the early morning, I can collect my thoughts, set my intentions for the day, and simply enjoy the tranquillity. It’s a time for introspection and self-care, which is especially crucial for us women who often put the needs of others before our own.
- Community Connection
I’ve come to love the familiarity of seeing the same friendly faces in the morning and sometimes taking a moment to chat. It’s these small interactions that remind me of the importance of daily human connection.
- Love where you live
I’m fortunate to live in a beautiful place, and my morning walk allows me to appreciate it every single day. Whether it’s the colourful sunrise, a sneaky peek at someone’s lovely house or the serene greenery, my walks help me stay grounded.
- Use the time to your advantage!
To make the experience even more enjoyable, I often listen to a podcast, an audiobook, music, or simply take in the soothing sound of the birds. It’s a great opportunity to learn something new, get lost in a story, or simply let my mind wander.
- Don’t worry about the weather
Now that the days are getting colder here in the UK, you might wonder if I’m still committed to my morning walk. The answer is a resounding “yes!” The chill in the air adds an extra invigorating element to the routine. Nothing better than a walk on a sunny day or the feeling of accomplishment when you’ve been out in the rain, when you know others are hiding under their duvet.
- Give it a try
My morning walk have become an essential part of my daily routine. It’s a simple yet powerful habit that has brought about positive changes in my life.
If you’re considering incorporating new habits into your life, I highly recommend giving morning walk a try.
Remember, change doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small, enjoy your ‘me’ time, and embrace the beauty that surrounds you. It’s a fantastic morning habit for me, and I believe it can be for you too.
Wishing you a beautiful day filled with fresh beginnings and newfound routines.
