I wanted to share a bit of my journey with you because, like so many women, I’ve been on a quest to inject more fun into my life, especially as I’ve hit my 40s. Life’s too short not to enjoy every moment, right?
Growing up, I was always the serious one, shouldering more responsibilities than I’d care to admit. It took me until my mid-twenties to realise that I wanted a change. I craved more fun, but the challenge was figuring out how to make that happen.
I’ve always admired those effortlessly engaging people who light up a room, but it didn’t feel like a skill of mine.
I vividly remember a turning point for me. Picture this: Austria, a summer luge track, and an instructor urging me to avoid using the brakes for more fun. Initially, the idea of hurtling down a mountain without brakes seemed absurd. But then a little voice inside me said, “Sarah, just let go.” And I did. Silly as it may sound, that moment taught me the power of surrendering control and embracing the unknown. I had fun!
As we age, it’s easy to forget about fun. Responsibilities, work, and the daily grind take over, leaving little room for joy. Yet, I’ve come to realise that fun isn’t just a luxury; it’s essential for managing our mental and emotional well-being. It reduces stress, anxiety, and contributes to a healthier life.
Science journalist Catherine Price, in her TED Talk: Why having fun is the secret to a healthier life, says It’s not just enjoyable, it’s also essential for your health and happiness.
Here are 7 ways I think you could try to add more fun into your life as an adult.
- Try Something New: Break free from the routine by exploring a new hobby, trying a different restaurant, or picking up a new sport. Variety is the spice of life!
- Have a Holiday or Short Break: Even a brief escape from your daily routine can work wonders. It’s a chance to recharge, refresh, and come back with a new perspective.
- Spend Time with Loved Ones: Choose your companions wisely, opting for those who uplift and bring happiness to your day. Whether it’s a shopping spree, a pampering session, or a simple movie night, cherish moments with those who matter.
- Laugh More: Laughter truly is the best medicine. Dive into a funny movie, listen to a comedy podcast, or watch a live stand-up show. It’s a proven stressbuster.
- Spend Time Outdoors: Nature has a magical way of lifting spirits. Whether it’s a stroll or a quiet moment in your garden, being outdoors can improve your mood and help melt away stress.
- Learn a New Skill: Embrace the thrill of learning. It’s not about perfection but the happiness and sense of self achievement that comes from trying something new. As well as an opportunity to connect with new people, explore different skills – the process itself is immensely rewarding.
- Take a Break from Technology: I’m guilty of falling down the social media rabbit hole too. Disconnect, go for a walk, cook, read, or indulge in a documentary. Anything to break the screen trance.
Life is an adventure and there are many ways to add more fun and excitement to your life. So go ahead and try something new today!
