How can we break free from the grip of procrastination?

As someone who regularly experiences procrastination, especially in my endeavour to provide consistent, valuable content.  I’ve decided to confront this challenge head-on in this week’s blog. Join me as I explore this common struggle and discover strategies for reclaiming our productivity.

It’s that sneaky little habit that seems to creep up on us when we least expect it. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Procrastination is the thief of time.” It’s from a poem by the English writer Edward Young, penned back in the 1800s, and yet it couldn’t be more relevant today.

Procrastination is usually best described as – the act of delaying something that you should do, usually because you do not want to do it

But here’s the thing – it’s not just being lazy or lack of willpower that’s at play here. More often than not, it’s a sign of something deeper.

Have you ever found yourself sitting down to tackle a task, only to realise that suddenly, that window you’ve been meaning to clean for ages or the dishwasher you didn’t bother emptying this morning becomes a priority. Don’t be disheartened; procrastination is a common struggle for many of us. I speak from experience because I, too, am a regular procrastinator.

As I’ve gotten to know myself better, I’ve come to understand why these feelings arise. Yes, it might be that I don’t want to do the task at hand, but sometimes it’s also about worries of not being good enough, fear of failure, or concern about judgment from others. Instead of facing these feelings or fears head-on, many of us retreat into the familiar territory of procrastination, where we don’t have to confront our vulnerabilities.

Nowadays, distractions are abundant. Whether it’s scrolling through our phones, online shopping, or binge-watching Netflix, there are countless ways to avoid facing our responsibilities.

However, procrastination is often a symptom of feeling overwhelmed. It’s a signal from your mind and body that you need to pause and reassess. Even dealing with simple tasks at times, can feel exhausting.

Perhaps you’re feeling stretched too thin, or maybe you’re dealing with emotions that you haven’t fully addressed. Whatever the case may be, procrastination is your body’s way of saying, “Hey, slow down and take care of yourself.”

So how can you overcome the cycle of procrastination and reclaim back control?

Let’s be honest, you will never be able to avoid feelings of procrastination.

It begins with recognising it as it arises. It’s not about avoiding tasks or feelings. Avoidance only perpetuates the cycle of overwhelm and vulnerability. The longer we put things off, the more daunting they become, and the harder it is to muster the courage to tackle them. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps us stuck in a rut of inaction. Don’t let those feelings paralyse you. Instead, use them as fuel to propel you forward.

Start with self-compassion and understanding. Acknowledge your feelings of overwhelm and vulnerability Instead of beating yourself up for not being “productive enough,” try to recognise the underlying reasons behind your procrastination. Are you feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks on your to-do list? Are you afraid of failure or perfectionism? Or perhaps you’re simply in need of a break to recharge and rejuvenate.

Break Tasks Down. Break tasks down into smaller, more manageable steps. Instead of focusing on the seemingly insurmountable task ahead of you, concentrate on the next small step. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s delegating tasks to a colleague at work or asking your family for support at home, you don’t have to do it all alone.

Above all, remember to be kind to yourself. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s more than enough. Give yourself permission to take breaks, to rest, to recharge. Grab a cup of tea or take a walk to refresh and revive yourself and your thoughts.

Embrace your vulnerabilities, learn from your setbacks, and keep moving forward with courage and resilience. Remember that self-care is not selfish; it’s essential for your well-being.

So, the next time you find yourself procrastinating, take a moment to pause and reflect. Listen to what your mind and body are trying to tell you and respond with kindness and understanding.

You have the strength within you to overcome procrastination and achieve your goals. Trust yourself and take that first step towards a more productive and fulfilling life.
